7 Signs You Might Have Eye Cataracts

Cataracts are among the most common causes of blindness in people over 65. However, proper eye care not only corrects cataracts, but usually restores sight to better than before! Here are seven signs that you may need care for cataracts from your doctor of optometry, Dr. Geraldine R. Brooks, and the team at Precision Optometry in Rocklin, CA.

Blurred Vision and Impaired Night Vision

Cataracts cloud the clear lens of your eye. One of the earliest signs of cataracts is vision blurred vision. The fog blocks light from coming into your eye. This condition affects the amount of light that gets to your eye to see, and when there isn’t light, you won’t see clearly.

One Eye with Double Vision

Cataracts can form a lens with a lens that gives you double vision. What's different about this symptom is that it usually occurs in just one eye or at least one eye at a time. There is no way to correct this double vision with glasses.

Halos Around Lights and Glare in Bright Light

Years before, cataracts caused significant problems with your sight. For example, you may start seeing rings around street lights and headlights at night. The problem may progress to the point that you must know when outdoors in bright sunlight, even with polarized lenses in your sunglasses.

Bright Light to Read

Cataracts can have a paradoxical effect on your ability to read. At first, your near vision may improve. If you have needed reading glasses for a long time, at least for a few years, you may not need them for reading and close work. As the condition progresses, you will have more trouble reading. The first thing you will notice is that you need bright light.

Faded Colors

The cataract inside the lens of your eye gradually turns yellowish or brown. As a result, everything you see through that eye also takes on a yellow or brown tint. One of the things cataract surgery patients talk about most when they have their surgery is that colors seem brighter again.
