Low Vision

What Is Low Vision?

Low vision has several potential causes, including cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, refractive errors, and age-related macular degeneration. These are just some of the conditions that can fast track the development of low vision.

If you have a visual acuity between 20/70 and 20/400, you have a very narrow field of vision. You’re considered legally blind and cannot adequately correct your visoin with glasses, contacts, and other treatments.

Symptoms of Low Vision

If you have low vision, you may notice central or peripheral vision loss. You may also experience blurry vision or night blindness. If you have problems seeing in low light or have poor peripheral vision, contact our optometrist right away.

Symptoms of low vision may include:

•             Nearsighted

•             Farsighted

•             Blurry Vision

These symptoms also apply to numerous conditions, such as blepharitis and refractive vision errors. Talk to your eye doctor about whether you may have low vision and what you can do about it.

Can an Optometrist Treat Low Vision?

There is no cure for low vision. Eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other assistive devices cannot solve the problem. Our team can recommend videos and literature to help you understand what’s happening to your eyes. If you decide to wear special glasses, you can reap the benefits of your new prescription. We'll do what it takes to help you protect your remaining vision.
