Astigmatism

Astigmatism

Did you know that the shape of your eye can affect your vision? For clear vision at all distances, your eyes should have a round shape. If yours are shaped like an egg, you might have a refractive error known as astigmatism. At Precision Optometry, we provide eye exams to learn more about your condition and treatment that can improve your vision. Before scheduling an appointment, learn about some symptoms of astigmatism below:

Astigmatism

Causes of Astigmatism

When the curvature of the cornea or lens is too steep in one direction, it affects the way light enters your eye. Instead of being able to see clearly, you may experience blurry vision at all distances. Some people are born with this type of refractive error. Others develop astigmatism due to a disease, surgical procedure, or an eye injury.

Symptoms of Astigmatism

Do you have blurry vision? With astigmatism, you might have a hard time seeing objects that are near and far clearly. Along with that, the condition can also cause halos around lights, eye strain, and headaches.

Diagnosing Astigmatism

Our optometrist can confirm if you have astigmatism during an eye exam. We will check your vision, examines your eye structures, and checks to see how light bends when it enters your eyes. If we confirm that you have astigmatism, we will recommend the necessary treatment to improve your vision.

Treatment for Astigmatism

Astigmatism can be treated with corrective lenses or surgery. Our eye doctor may recommend eyeglasses or contact lenses to help you see more clearly. However, if you want to eliminate glasses or contacts, you might consider refractive surgery. It’s important to keep in mind that not everyone is a candidate for this procedure and that there are risks.
